Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
-
3/4 cup sugar
4 large egg yolks
-
1/4 cup Luxardo Maraschino liqueur
-
Luxardo Maraschino cherries, chopped
Directions
In a saucepan, heat the milk and cream over medium heat until it's just about to boil. Remove from heat.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and egg yolks until pale and creamy.
Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in the Luxardo Maraschino liqueur.
Let the mixture cool completely, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Once chilled, churn the mixture in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.
During the last few minutes of churning, fold in the chopped Luxardo Maraschino cherries.
Transfer the gelato to a container, cover, and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm before serving.
