Mustard

Whether at a ballgame or an upscale French restaurant, you can find delectable uses for the delightfully tangy condiment of mustard. Made by brewing mustard seeds with lemon juice, vinegar, and other acidic liquids, mustard is found in cuisines worldwide. From glazes to dressings, sandwich spreads to dipping sauces, mustard is extremely versatile and can add bright, peppery flavor to your next meal.

What kinds of mustard are there?

Once you start exploring, you’ll find there are more types of mustard than standard yellow mustard for hot dogs! The popular Dijon mustard originated in France, where a mustard producer replaced vinegar in his recipe with the liquid from unripened green grapes. Whole grain mustard includes pieces of the mustard seed, while honey mustard often includes sweeter ingredients like brown sugar and honey. English mustard, such as the famous Colman’s brand, is notable for its strength of acidic flavor and thick consistency.

How can I use mustard?

Mustard makes a delicious condiment for charcuterie board meats and cheeses. Serve salty prosciutto on a sandwich layered with dijon mustard, pickles, and gruyere cheese. Spread mustard on hamburgers and hot dogs at a cookout. Mustard also makes a delicious ingredient in marinades, salad dressings, and glazes. Make your own dijon vinaigrette or coat chicken in dijon mustard before baking in the oven.
