Over 200 Years of Sardinian Cheese
The Locatelli family has been producing cheese on the Italian island of Sardinia for over 200 years. Centuries of craftsmanship have led them to become synonymous with pecorino cheese, and today, Locatelli Pecorino Romano is the number one imported Italian cheese! Locatelli cheese continues to be made with the same traditional methods since its inception, by hand and only with 100% pure local sheep’s milk.
What Makes Locatelli Cheese Different
The local Sardinian sheep that provide the milk for the brand’s famous Italian cheese are just as much part of the family as the Locatelli’s themselves! Pasture-raised and grass-fed, these sheep come from family-run farms that have been partnered with the Locatelli brand for decades. The sheep’s diet of tender, sweet top blade grass makes Locatelli cheese rich, buttery, and nutty. To top it all off, the company even hand-harvests their own salt from the Mediterranean, which is rubbed onto each cheese wheel.
Types of Locatelli Cheese
While they are most famous for their Pecorino Romano, Locatelli also produces other varieties of pecorino cheese, with different aging times and flavors. They also make an Italian cheese called ricotta salata. At Supermarket Italy, you’ll find Locatelli Pecorino Romano grated cheese, cheese wedges, and bulk cheese wheels up to 60 lbs!
