Quality Cheeses Since 1953
Calabro's story begins in the mountains of Sicily, where the Calabro family turned fresh milk into their signature cheeses. In 1948, they left Sicily to start new lives in America. By 1953, the family had founded the Calabro brand, delivering cheese, sausage, and ice cream to Italian grocers and families in Connecticut. Today, Calabro has grown their operations, distributing their cheeses to 27 states in the US.
Calabro Cheeses
Calabro produces a variety of cheeses, including ricotta, mozzarella, and mascarpone cheeses. Supermarket Italy offers their scamorza and caciocavallo cheeses. Scamorza is a semi-soft cheese made from cow's milk. Caciocavallo is a traditional Sicilian cow's milk cheese with a name that translates to "cheese on horseback." This name comes from the way the cheese is prepared, by drying cheese curds over a branch, much like a saddlebag. Calabro also produces smoked versions of both of these cheeses, flavored with smoke from hardwoods. With free shipping on orders over $75, Supermarket Italy is a great place to stock up on cheeses made in the Sicilian tradition.
Authentic Italian Recipes
Grate Calabro cheeses over your favorite pasta recipes. Melt their semi-soft cheeses over pizza for a gourmet slice. Try adding their smoked scamorza or caciocavallo to a sandwich or toasted panini with fresh greens and thinly sliced cured meats. Or use Calabro's cheeses to prepare a light caprese salad. You can even melt these cheeses in an indulgent grilled cheese.
Charcuterie and Cheese Platters
Calabro cheeses are ideal for charcuterie platters and cheese boards. Enjoy with salami, prosciutto, and even Spanish chorizo. Serve with fresh or dried fruits and Italian cheeses such as pecorino romano and grana padano. Sample with toasted bread, tomatoes, fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil on a crostini plate. Or simply savor Calabro's semi-soft cheeses with a bold glass of wine.
