James J. Barry founded his Irish tea brand in 1901 in the city of Cork. The company’s excellence was officially recognized in 1934 when Anthony Barry was awarded the Empire Cup for tea blending. The Barry family’s initial focus was on imported Indian tea, but over the decades, they expanded their range by sourcing African tea as well. The brand sells only 100% natural tea, guaranteed to be free of additives, artificial colors, and preservatives.
Barry’s Tea Ethics & Sustainability
More than great taste and high quality leaves go into making Barry’s Tea one of the best tea brands. The Irish tea company makes a concerted effort to positively impact the African communities they source from by purchasing 95% of product directly through government agencies that represent small farmers. In addition to making sure the local workers benefit economically from the tea trade, Barry’s also works with the Rainforest Alliance to engage in sustainable agriculture. Barry’s Tea boxes are also 100% recyclable and printed using vegetable-based inks. They have just launched an initiative in 2021 to make their tea bags totally biodegradable.
Types of Tea
In the last 120 years, Barry’s has expanded their collection of tea bags and loose leaf tea to include all types of black tea, fruit tea, herbal tea, green tea, decaf tea, and various tea blends.
