Emancipation and Busha Browne
Emancipation of British colonial slaves in 1834 changed the way local Jamaican plantations operated. Many plantation owners no longer found them financially feasible to run without free labor, so they sold their large estates to local managers called bushas. Descendants of the Brownes, wealthy plantation owners who settled in Jamaica from Ireland, were among the first to free their slaves. The Brownes were also locally known for their love of cooking and delicious family recipes. The brand name Busha Browne is a tribute to Jamaica’s rich and complex history, and the important role food played in it.
The Essence of Jamaican Food
Jamaican food recipes reflect the country’s long history of colonization, combining English, Irish, Spanish, Indian, and a variety of other culinary influences. The Caribbean island’s tropical fruits and spices, as well as the local seafood, all contribute to Jamaican food traditions. The most famous of all Jamaican food recipes is jerk sauce and seasoning, made with scallions, hot peppers, thyme, cane sugar, and a host of other sweet, savory, and spicy ingredients.
Types of Busha Browne Products
