What is farfalle pasta?
Farfalle is a type of pasta that comes from northern Italy. It is said to date back all the way to the 1500s! The name of this pasta comes from the Italian word for “butterflies” due to the pasta’s wing-like shape. Today, most people know farfalle pasta as bow tie pasta.
What types of farfalle are there?
Farfalle actually comes in several sizes, textures, and even colors! Farfalle rigate is a bow tie pasta that has ridges in it, giving it a texture much different than its typically smooth surface. Other farfalle pasta types include smaller farfalle noodles known as “farfalline,” and larger ones known as “farfalloni.” Italians also make different color pasta types (a.k.a. tricolore pasta) specifically to showcase their pride in the Italian flag. Farfalle can be colored green using spinach and red using beetroot.
What are popular farfalle recipes?
Farfalle recipes are numerous and varied, but the one thing they all have in common is thick sauces. Farfalle is a sturdy pasta that can handle heavy cream sauces or hearty ragu sauces. Italian sausage is also a common ingredient in farfalle recipes.
