Premier French Salt Since 1934
La Baleine sea salt brand was founded in 1934 in Montpellier, France. Sold in more than 40 countries across several continents, this French salt is recognized internationally by its whale logo, which was designed by illustrator Benjamin Rabier, the hand behind the logo for distinguished cheese brand Laughing Cow (in French, “la vache qui rit”). Of course, the quality of La Baleine sea salt is what really makes the brand stand out!
The French Salt Marshes
The spring tides of the Atlantic Ocean fill the local ponds with sea water, where the salt then develops its own unique properties. It is harvested by salt workers using special rakes and dried by the sun. The process is entirely natural and works synergistically with the environment. There are even 500 species of birds that call these salt marshes home!
Types of La Baleine Sea Salt
La Baleine products can be sorted into two types: white salt and grey salt. Naturally grey salt, also known as Guérande salt, contains minerals and gets its signature color from ponds that have clay bottoms. White sea salt is harvested from ponds with sandy bottoms. La Baleine offers these varieties in both coarse sea salt and fine sea salt. Low-sodium and Kosher salt are also available!
