Over 100 Years of Goodness
Angelo Colussi opened a small confectionery in Venice, Italy, in 1911. He began by making traditional Venetian biscuits called baicoli. Over the next century, the company would expand the variety of the products to come out of their bakery to include Italian sweets like panettone, wafer cookies, and pastries. Their operation would grow outside of the Veneto region, and eventually their Italian cookies would bring joy to customers overseas. Today, each of their sweet biscuits remains an authentic product of Italy.
The GranTurchese Cookie
In branching out from the flat, oval-shaped baicoli biscuits, Colussi came up with a new Italian cookie design in 1955. This was the birth year of the GranTurchese, a circular cookie whose lattice design was inspired by a Roman stencil at the Pompeii museum. The special shape of this shortbread cookie made it perfect for dunking into a glass of milk, and so the GranTurchese has endured as an Italian favorite ever since. Supermarket Italy offers three versions of this distinctive cookie: The classic shortbread biscuit, an indulgent chocolate cookie, and a delicious chocolate-chip version.
A Continuous Evolution of Italian Biscuits
Colussi Italian cookies have never stopped evolving. In the 1980s, the brand introduced crackers and rusks, and in 2005, they expanded to no added sugar varieties. In response to customers’ increasing demand for healthier Italian snacks, Colussi eliminated palm oil from their recipe in 2016, and replaced 00 flour with unrefined bran flour in 2017. At Supermarket Italy, you’ll find all sorts of Colussi Italian snacks, including salted crackers, baicoli biscuits in decorative gift tins, lingue di gatto (cat tongue cookies), and chocolate GranTurchese shortbread biscuits. Send a custom Colussi gift basket filled with their authentic Italian baked goods.
